It is an absolutely beautiful piece of American engineering. Lester Allan Pelton patented his invention in 1880. It was first used in Nevada City California in 1878. By 1900, over 11,000 turbines were in use. There are two at Hoover Dam used to generate electricity for the Dam itself and not the grid.

Nozzles direct forceful, high-speed streams of water against a series of spoon-shaped buckets, also known as impulse blades, which are mounted around the outer rim of a drive wheel.
Although Pelton turbines are very efficient, they are not as common as Francis turbines because the Pelton turbine requires a very large head of pressure to run.
